Remember When: Riki Tiki Tavi

This is a photo of me and our dog, Smokey, in front of the house I grew up in. I don't know the year.
What caught my eye while browsing the photo collection is the porch.
Yes, I'm hung up on porches lately.
So what does this have to do with Riki Tiki Tavi?
Remember him? The mongoose from the Rudyard Kipling books including "The Jungle Book."
Last month my book group read "The Tiger's Wife" by Tea Obreht. It is about a girl and her grandfather who always carried a copy of "The Jungle Book." Of course I am familiar with the story, although I can't remember ever reading it. Near the end of the book the author mentioned Riki Tiki Tavi and I was immediately taken to this porch. I was young standing in front of the door and something was happening with Riki Tiki Tavi.
Was it a childhood song?
Was somebody talking about the mongoose?
It was just a flash of memory but very strong. I asked in the group if anybody knew of a childhood song or any reason this memory should flash on Riki Tiki Tavi. Nobody knew.
I "felt" that porch the memory was so strong. I don't know why that flashed. Can any of my readers help? I've gone to Google and uTube and watched videos from the movies and nothing. No more flashes.
However, I did write about it in my journal. What will this mean in the end? I have no idea. But that's the way memories go.
Don't forget to record your flashes. They may lead to something in the future.
Memoir Prompts:
What are some of the books you read as a child?
Write down a family story told about your mother as a child? (This can be repeated for all members of your family.)
Have you ever seen a ghost?
Describe a place you visit a lot in as much detail as possible. (This could be a place in your home town or a vacation spot.)
What did you and your siblings fight about the most?
Write about a birthday party.
What is your most prized possession?

  1. Sometimes are memories just lead to mysteries, but it's worth the journey.

    1. Doesn't everybody love a good mystery?

    1. Thank you. I'm working away on my posts.

  3. I don't have the answer to your question, but maybe asking more questions will help lead you to the answer. Very often the meaning behind flashes is less literal, having more to do with associations.

Do you remember if there was ever a snake on your porch? Or someone with a shady personality--snakelike? Do you remember the Donovan song from the '60s, Rikki Tikki Tavi? Could you have heard that song while you were on your porch? Or had it running through your head? Could an ad for the Disney Rikki Tikki Tavi have flashed on the TV screen before you went out on to the porch?

Hmmm....think of the questions and maybe they'll lead you to an answer. And PLEASE let us know if and when you solve the puzzle!

    1. No answers yet but it's been fun reading all the comments and even the puzzle of figuring it out.

  4. Maybe the classic cartoon he's on a porch here: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l4qk2qM6NK1qb3mmfo1_400.jpg or you could have seen a squirrel?

    1. None of these things have lead to more of a memory. But that's okay. It's been lots of fun trying to figure it out.
