Remember When: Rocking Away

While enjoying the beautiful weather at the Desert Nights, Rising Stars Writing Conference at ASU last weekend I came across this scene. It is on the porch of the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing. The house was once where the dean lived and it is next door to Old Main: the "Normal School" built in 1894. The building is being renovated so I couldn't go inside but these wonderful chairs were so inviting.
Imagine yourself sitting on this porch. How old are you? What are you wearing? Do your feet touch the floor?
Who would you most like to have sitting in the other chair? Describe them.
What would you ask this person?

Memoir Prompts:

Write about where you came in the family and how your position affected you. (First, middle, last or only child.)

Write about the first sad thing that comes to mind from when you were a child.

Write about the first happy thing that comes to mind from when you were a child.

Write about things you have in storage.

List the schools you attended. What was your highest level of school?

Write about being homesick.

If you were/are surrounded by snow right now. What would you make?

  1. What a wonderful photo! The way the chairs are situated, it looks like they're rocking. Invisible guests on the porch?

Now that I'm collecting all your great writing prompts, I'm going to have to make a "Rita" journal filled with essays on my life. They really do inspire memories that otherwise would have remained hidden back in the far corners of my mind.

    1. Thank you. That's the whole idea. It's all worthwhile if I know people are responding. It would be a "Barbara" file.

  2. This winter's snow produced my favorite memory a snowman that outlived an entire day of rainstorm that our daughter's and I made together. I was so proud of that little melting mound.

  3. If I was surrounded by snow right now, I would stay in the house and enjoy it from the inside.

Also, I enjoyed your post. The rocking chairs look wonderful.

    1. Don't you just want to sit with a pillow, throw and your favorite journal and pen. One of these days I'm going to drive over there and do just that.
