Tuesdays With Rita: Childhood Performances

Were you ever in a performance when you were very small?

When I was little we lived two doors down from the Church of God in Kansas. My Great Uncle lived next door between the church and us, he was the minister. My mother was our Sunday School teacher.

I don't remember the occasion but Mom made the little plum blossom dresses from crepe paper. I distinctly remember how Mom fussed over every little bit of our costumes. I remember the feel and the crinkle of the dresses as we walked down the aisle to the front of the small church.

I wish I had asked Mom about this in later years and made a note of the exact occasion. Easter, May Day, first day of Spring? I just don't know. I'm not even sure how old I was but maybe 4 or 5. That's me on the right in front. I don't remember any of the girls now, either. I'm glad we at least have the photo.

Do you have memories of a performance?

  1. It's hard to believe, but I actually had a speaking part in a Christmas play when I was in the second grade. I was an angel announcing the birth of Jesus. That wouldn't be allowed now in a public school, I'm sorry to say!
